A Pause to Say "Thank You"

An ESUN Article

Bruce Shriver, PhD
Editor-in-Chief, ESUN

We published our first issue of ESUN in February 2004, five and half years ago. I think it is important at this point to step back and say "thank you" to everyone involved in this publication.

Many of you may not be aware of who are members of our board and staff. They are listed below. Each member of our Medical Editorial and Advisory Board, all extremely busy physicians, has given freely of their time to review articles that have been submitted for consideration for publication. In addition, many of them have written articles and Op Ed pieces for ESUN.

We have also enlisted the assistance of over 100 sarcoma oncologists worldwide in our peer-review process. They have taken time out of their schedules to send us detailed comments about the submissions we receive. Scores of sarcoma patients, caregivers, and survivors have also commented on submissions. ESUN has benefitted from an untold number of hours over this period of time from the Editorial Staff, Contributing Editors, and Copy Editors – all volunteers who have been affected by sarcoma.

There is, however, a particular volunteer that I must single out for extraordinary contributions to our efforts – our Associate Editor, Mary Sorens, who is an osteosarcoma survivor. She not only completely redesigned our website earlier this year to make the contents of ESUN more accessible and useful, but she also completely redesigned our clinical trials abstracts and search engine process, making this a truly useful facility. She has done all of this while being the inspiration and leading light of the online Adult Bone Cancer Survivors group, a time consuming commitment in its own right. Moreover, she has had an integral role in the Team Sarcoma Initiative (i.e., the International Sarcoma Awareness Week) in the past few years, helping it grow to over 8,000 people worldwide last year.

"Thank you" for everything you are doing for the sarcoma community is insufficient. Mary, we are in your debt.
