Dr. Mark C. Gebhardt Mark C. Gebhardt, M.D., is the Chairman and Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the Frederick W. and Jane M. Ilfeld Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. His work focuses on limb-sparing surgery of musculoskeletal tumors for patients who might otherwise need amputation. He is the Chair of the Orthopaedic Surgeons Committee of the Children’s Oncology Group, a multi-center national research study group for the advancement of treatment of pediatric cancers. He enjoys taking care of patients with tumor problems, as well as the challenge of leading an academic department and helping young orthopaedic surgeons start their career. He has served as a Director of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Inc, and is a past-Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Orthopaedics. He is Past-Chair of the Council on Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies (now Board of Specialty Societies) and has served on the Board of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is past-Chair of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons. Currently he is a member-at-large for the AAOS Council on Education and a member of the Leadership Development Committee of the American Orthopaedic Association.
