Dr. Piotr RutkowskiDr. Rutkowski was born in Lodz, Poland, where he received his primary and secondary school education. He earned his MD from the Medical University of Lodz. After residency he completed the general surgery board at the Medical University of Warsaw (2005), Poland, and then he obtained his specialty in surgical oncology (2009) at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Warsaw, Poland. He defended his doctoral thesis about cytokine levels in patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas in 2001.

Dr. Rutkowski was a visiting physician in postgraduate training at the General Surgery Department of Sheffield University, UK; EAES training in Tuttlingen, Germany; at the Sarcoma and Melanoma Unit of the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, UK; and in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University Hospital in Groningen, Netherlands.

Dr. Rutkowski was promoted to Associate Professor at Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology in 2008. He currently works in the Department of Soft Tissue/Bone Sarcoma and Melanoma. The Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology in Warsaw, Poland is the leading Polish oncological center in the field of sarcoma research and therapy. Dr. Rukowski's scientific activities are focused on sarcoma research (multimodal treatment and prognostic factors), GIST (molecular aspects of treatment of advance disease and mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapy) and melanoma (sentinel node biopsy tissues, adjuvant therapy, detection of submicroscopic disease and circulating molecular prognostic makers). He has participated in several investigator driven trials in sarcoma and melanoma and is a member of the steering committee of the CAMN107A2201 GIST trial. He is coordinator of the Polish Clinical GIST Registry and is a reviewer for the European Journal of Surgical Oncology, the World Journal of Surgical Oncology and The Lancet journal. He is a member of several Polish (board member of Polish Society Surgical Oncology) and international scientific societies, an active member of EORTC Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group, EORTC Melanoma Group, and the Global Melanoma Task Force. Dr. Rutkowski has authored or co-authored over 80 scientific papers in Polish and international journals, and is co-author of national and international recommendations in sarcoma and melanoma. He is working very closely in national patients' advocacy groups for GIST and sarcoma.
