Phase III Clinical Trials for Sarcoma

Dr. Richard Gorlick: I would almost always encourage participation in a phase III clinical trial when a patient has a disease that's eligible for it. The nature of Phase III clinical trials is: it's a comparison of what's believed to be the standard of care verses something that experts believe to be even better. Frequently, when those type of clinical trials are being done, the arm that is the newer arm includes treatments that are only going to be available in the context of a clinical trial. Frequently those involve the addition of agents which are unlicensed. And although there are certainly risks for participating in it, because it's an agent that isn't as well established, generally it's my belief that those agents are going to offer an advantage. Most of the time it's people who are thoughtful about the disease that have designed the trials and believe its incorporation is of benefit.
