Why does Sarcoma Develop?
Dr. Dina Lev: To me sarcomas are a whole world of questions, and it's a very unique disease. And I keep on thinking about a lot of things that might be more philosophical than factual. But the fact is that we really do not understand how sarcomas initiate and why some patients will get sarcomas.
And as I've said when I talk to a variety of people, why is it that dogs, for example, or cats have huge amounts of sarcomas, but humans don't, while our body is mainly composed of soft tissue? And I think that the rarity of these tumors... also it's a statistical issue. So it means that you need to have a very specific rare genetic change in order to use sarcomas. Based on that I also am hopeful because when you have a rare disease with a rare genetic change, there is also a higher chance, potentially, to identify a cure for such a change, because you can target just one change that makes this disease initiate.
