Luca Sangiorgi, MD PhD

Luca Sangiorgi is the head of the Clinical Genetics Unit of the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute (IOR) in Bologna, Italy. He is also contract professor of Medical Genetics for the Medical Faculty and of Bioinformatics for the Faculty of Science, Mathematics and Physics of the University of Bologna.

Dr Sangiorgi received a Medical Degree at the University of Bologna. After completing his residency, he received his board in oncology from the University of Bologna and he received his Ph.D. in Clinical Genetics at Rome University. Dr Sangiorgi is coordinator of the IOR Rare Disease Center and responsible for three National Registers of Rare Disease (including Li-Fraumeni syndrome). He is also Member of the National Coordination of the Hub and Spoke Network of Clinical Genetics. He currently serves as Expert Reviewer for the European Union Commission for the Framework Projects 6 (FP6) and Framework Projects 7 grants.

Dr Sangiorgi's research interests are on clinical and molecular genetics and correlation between genotype and phenotype in bone sarcomas and musculoskeletal disorders. He is also interested in bioinformatics applications that correlate genomic alteration and occurrence of diseases. He is a contributor of more than 40 articles published in peer reviewed journals such as Journal of Clinical Oncology Human Mutation and International Journal of Cancer. Dr Sangiorgi is an active Member of several international medical associations. He is a member of the executive committee of CTOS, serving as Treasurer. He is also a member of the European Musculo Skeletal Oncology Society (EMSOS), the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), and the Italian Society of Human Genetics. He is the Coordinator of the Regional Lab for Bioinformatics (GeBBA-Lab) and is also member of HL7 interest group for bioinformatics.
